Where the map of this world ends, that’s where the map of Timbuktu begins…”

Although its precise etymology is unknown, French orientalist René Basset posited that in the Berber languages “buqt” means “far away”, and “Tin-Buqt(u)” means a place almost at the other end of the world. Timbuktu here refers to the furthest place of the imagination, a mystical realm beyond the material world, and a quixotic idea.

This curated exhibition will feature a selection of sought-after artists from Ireland and beyond. The artists presented here, together for the first time and on such a scale, are successfully showing their work nationally and internationally, through solo exhibitions in commerical galleries and institutions, Biennales and Art Fairs, – garnering as they go, artists’ awards and residencies – and engaging with current agendas within art practice, defining and redrawing the parameters of what it means to be an international artist. Following the success of last year’s group painting exhibition ‘Thirty Two Thousand Years Later’, the curators have brought to bear a more open-ended expression of ‘wall-based’ artworks, introducing ‘plastic’ possibilities into the frame of the exhibition.

Pallas Contemporary Projects focuses on the exchange of Irish and international with a strong conceptual approach working in different media. PCP is also a proving ground for young and emerging artists, offering a space to experiment and take risks with their practice. Commission on sales at Timbuktu will go towards the galleries 2009 exhibition programme.
