Unstable Categories: ‘A Conversation about Rocks’

Join the artist Emma McKeagney in a conversation with geologist David Chew about the rocks which inhabit the exhibition and their journey to being there. Geological processes are at work constantly and how we harness and use them to make art work is a fascination of the artist. They will discuss these processes and how we as humans effect and use them.

Biographies:
Dr David Chew is an Associate Professor of Geology and Head of Department at Trinity College Dublin. He received his PhD from University College Dublin in 2001. He teaches tectonics to undergraduate students and his research involves studying plate tectonic processes and ancient climatic events in Earth history using geochronology (isotopic dating of rocks and minerals).
Emma McKeagney’s practice involves working closely with material processes to create bodies of work which incorporate the idea that a process is made up of not only the artist but the material they use and the impending idea of exhibiting. Reading and discussing various topics related to New Materialism, her interest starts with collapsing any hierarchy which puts humans ahead of all other materiality.
McKeagney graduated in 2017 from Dun Laoghaire IADT, Unstable Categories is her first solo-show.
She received Talbot Studio’s Most Promising Graduate Award 2017 and is a recipient of a Sculpture Award from Firestation Artist’s Studios where she developed her work in recent months.
