Cormac Healy

Born in Dublin in 1973, Healy recieved a 1st class Hons degree in Fine Art Painting and  was the first to be a  recipient of the  NCEA Student of the Year Award in 1995 from Crawford College of Art & Design. In 1997 Healy represented Ireland at Dzujika 97, an International painting Exhibition and residency programme in Lithuania. In 2002 he organized and participated in Vision Ireland, an International Artists Plenary and residency programme at the Tyrone Guthric Centre, Annaghmakerrig, Monaghan. His work has been exhibited extensively, both nationally and Internationally - Iceland, Holland, Denmark, Spain and London.

Healys work has been represented on the covers of literary works including The Future of Islam ( Nosuch Publishing, 2007) and Daytime Astronomy ( Paul Grattan, Salmon Press, 2011). Solo shows include  In Tandem, Ardara Arts Centre, Donegal, 2001, Falling Leaves,  Gallery 44, Cork, 2003 and New Works, The Blue Leaf Gallery, Dublin 2005.

The method Healy employs  involves working both vertically and horizontally, where  paint, dry pigments and additives are poured and applied thinly and in pools. The canvases are folded and crumpled to allow the colours to intermix and spread according to the topography of the canvas. Once dried, they are re-stretched and worked on  repeatedly until completion. The paintings begin from  photographic sources. In many instances, the images refer  to particular events. However,  the photographs are merely a starting point, it is in the process of making the paintings that invention takes over. The substance and manipulation of paint dictates where subtle nuances can be found.
