A cloud of soft equations is the most recent manifestation of an evolving work by Dennis McNulty, which has its genesis in The Eyes of Ayn Rand, a piece he produced for Performa 11. In early 2013 the performance was reconfigured for the Scriptings Showroom in Berlin and re-named The face of something new. This incarnation, its third, will temporarily inhabit the warren of buildings, which was formerly the UCD campus, at the rear of the National Concert Hall on Earlsfort Terrace in Dublin.
In A cloud of soft equations, a sequence of physical spaces are overlaid with texts of various kinds, to produce a tension between a physically experienced spatial narrative and an evolving set of linguistic, spatial and technological associations.

A cloud of soft equations is part of the exhibition Periodical Review #3 at Pallas Projects/Studios. Not a group exhibition per se, Periodical Review is a discursive action, with the gallery as a magazine-like layout of images that speak (the field talking to itself). Each year PP/S invite two peers – artists, writers, educators, curators – to review and subsequently nominate a number of art practices, which will be selected via an editorial meeting. Such a review-type exhibition within Irish art practice acts to revisit, be a reminder, a critical appraisal and consolidation of ideas and knowledge within the field of contemporary Irish art.
Dennis McNulty's work is generated through an investigation of embodied knowledge in relation to other forms of knowledge, often in the context of the built environment. Beginning with detailed research of various kinds, and informed by his studies in psychoacoustics, the works often take hybrid forms, drawing on aspects of cinema, sculpture, sound and performance.
Recent solo projects include INTERZONE, The Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio (2013); A Stew of Universals, ZKU - Zentrum fur Kunst and Urbanistik, Berlin (2013); The Face of Something New, Scriptings, Berlin (2013); PRECAST, Preston's Road roundabout and Robin Hood Gardens Estate, Blackwall, East London (2012); Some feeling of living in today, Jerusalem Project (2012); and Another Construction, Irish Museum of Modern Art (2011).
In 2004 McNulty represented Ireland at the São Paulo Bienal. In 2012 a monograph entitled Obscure Flows Boil Underneath was published by IMMA Associated Press.
He is represented by Green On Red, Dublin.
