Artists Announced—Artist-Initiated Projects 2019

Pallas Projects/Studios are delighted to announce the participating artists in our programme of Artist-Initiated Projects 2019. The series of 10 x 3-week exhibitions between March—November 2019 will present exhibitions of new work by: Celina Muldoon, Aideen Farrell, Marie Farrington, Tadhg Ó Cuirrín, The Queeratorial curated by Aoife Banks, Liliane Puthod, 1iing Heaney, Kerry Guinan, Jonathan Mayhew, Doireann Ni Ghrioghair.

Artist-Initiated Projects at Pallas Projects/Studios is an open-submission, annual gallery programme of 10 x 3-week exhibitions taking place between March and November 2019. This unique programme of funded, artist-initiated projects selected via open call is highly accessible to artists, with a focus on early career, emerging artists and recent graduates. Projects are supplemented with artists' talks, texts, workshops or performances, and gallery visits by colleges and local schools.

Artist-Initiated Projects aims to act as an incubator for early careers, and support artists' practices at crucial stages, providing a platform for artists to produce and exhibit challenging work across all art forms. The model of short-run exhibitions with a relatively short turnaround time of 3–6 months is an alternative to the normal institutional model, where the process of studio visit to exhibition can take several years. Shorter lead-in times allow the programme to be quick and responsive, reflect what artists are currently making, and encourage experimentation and risk-taking.

Pallas Projects/Studios is one of Ireland's longest running artist-run spaces, with a dedicated tradition over 22 years towards the professional development of artists in a peer-led, supportive environment, providing opportunities for emerging and mid-career artists to develop and exhibit new work. PP/S have established a nationwide and international reputation among artists and organisations, and a public profile through successful and critically engaged exhibitions, publishing, collaborations and partnerships, and education programmes for schools. Recent projects include the 4-year research project and publication 'Artist-Run Europe', published by Onomatopee, Eindhoven in 2016, and the annual 'Periodical Review' exhibition now in its eighth year.

Celina Muldoon (b.1980) is an Artist based in North West Ireland. Graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Fine Art, I.T. Sligo in 2014 and completed an MFA in Sculpture from N.C.A.D. in 2016. Her graduate work 'We are in cahoots...You and I' was selected for Mobius(Boston) int. performance festival 2017 and Craw festival Berlin 2018. She has exhibited in TBG&S, The Complex, waveparticle, Celine gallery, Glasgow, Bushwick studios New York and Project Arts Centre Dublin. Residencies include MART and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre. She has been awarded the Next Generation Award, Artist in the community scheme award and a residency in Cowhouse studios in partnership with The Mothership Project in November 2018 and the Temple Bar Gallery and Studio Project Studio Award 2019. Aideen Farrell is a Dublin based installation artist. She is a graduate of the National College of Art and Design with joint honours in Fine Art Painting and Visual Culture. She recently completed a residency with Dublin City Arts Office at St Patrick’s Lodge. In 2017 she was awarded the Fire Station Graduate Sculpture Award 2017 and highly commended in the Visual arts category of the Undergraduate Awards. Recent exhibitions include Symbiosis, a group show at the Catalyst Arts Centre in Belfast and Showroom, a solo show at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar.

Marie Farrington studied in DIT (BA, 2013, 1.1) and NCAD (MA, 2016, 1.1). Upcoming exhibitions include A Vague Anxiety, Irish Museum of Modern Art (2019). Recent projects include RESORT Revelations (2018); SÍM Residency, Iceland (2018); Cf at the Research Pavilion, Venice Biennale (2017); In good faith they waited for gravity, RUA RED (solo, 2015); These Circular Ruins, Illuminations Gallery, Maynooth University (solo, 2016); In good faith they waited for gravity, RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre (solo, 2015). Marie was recently awarded a residential studio at Fire Station Artists’ Studios (2018-2020). She is supported by the Arts Council (2017, 2018).

Tadhg Ó Cuirrín; "I am an Irish visual artist and teacher based in Hà Nội, Vietnam. I received an honours degree in Fine Art, Painting in the Limerick School of Art and Design in 2009. I work in a variety of different media, have exhibited somewhat widely in the past, and worked for a number of artist-run spaces and organisations. In my work, I am interested in the narratives we build around the products and objects we own. In my work, there is control. I don't go out much"

Aoife Banks is a multidisciplinary artist and independent curator. Aoife’s practice explores queer and feminist dissent against oppressive sociopolitical structures, affective relations and curatorial activism. She is currently studying her MA in Visual Culture, Art in the Contemporary World, in the National College of Art and Design.

The work of Liliane Puthod focuses around sculptural research into commodity fetishism, consumerism and industrial forms of production in a globalised world. Dealing with notions of multiplicity and flux within an object or image as it relates to serial production, Puthod’s work draws from the paradoxical relationship between forms and the material they are made of. Recent exhibitions include solo shows The Showroom of Lilian Cashman, at Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, in 2018, Symbol Symbol Symbol at Eight Gallery, Dublin and group show The existence of flamethrowers in your street, curated by Catalyst Arts and 126 Gallery - Galway.

1iing is a digital artist from Bray, Co. Wicklow, experimenting with 3D modeling & animation. She received her BA in Fine Art Media from the National College of Art and Design in 2015. With a focus on the material nature of digital life, her work explores simulations and re-creations to generate an ambiguous digital world. Selected exhibitions include Terrestrial/Satellite in 126 Artist-Run Gallery, Galway (2018)[solo] & World Geometry in MART, Dublin (2016)[solo], Geological Cake, Burren College of Art Gallery, Co. Clare (2017). 1iing has received support from the Emerging Irish Artist Residency Award, Burren College of Art (2016) & Wicklow County Council (2016). She also facilitates Blender 3D animation workshops in Block-T, Dublin.

Kerry Guinan’s work and research interrogate the social relations of art under neoliberalism. This takes the form of public interventions, performances, and social experiments in the interstices of the art institution. Guinan has received the Arts Council of Ireland Next Generation Award (2018) and the Fingal Artists Support Scheme (2016, 2018). Her first solo exhibition ‘Presenting the Cultural Quarter’ took place at A4 Sounds, Dublin in 2017. Upcoming projects include an essay for 2ha journal: suburbia + architecture (2019), a residency, public artwork, and exhibition curated by Locust Projects, Miami (2019-2020), and a Masters by Research scholarship at the Limerick School of Art and Design (2019 -2021).

Jonathan Mayhew, born in 1981 in Dublin, is an artist living and working in Dublin. He completed MFA at NCAD in 2007. Recent shows include ‘digital_self’, Irish Museum of Modern Art, ‘Zurich Portrait Prize 2018’ National Galley of Ireland, ‘Sørlandsutstillingen,’ Kristiansand Kunsthall Norway and ‘The Way Things Go, An Homage’, The Butler Gallery and solo exhibitions ‘The stars turn and a time presents itself’, Risør Kunstpark, Norway, 2018 and ‘I Wanted to Write a Poem’ Wexford Arts Centre, 2017, where he was the 2015 EVA award winner. He is the TBG+S and HIAP International Residency Exchange recipient for 2019.

Doireann Ni Ghrioghair graduated from Chelsea College of Art, London in 2010. Recent exhibitions include Urgencies, CCA Derry-Londonderry (2019); Kilmaweschel MKH Biennale, Germany (2018); Fatal Attraction, Thameside Gallery, London (2018); We Only Want The Earth!, Adobe Bookshop Gallery, San Francisco (2018) ; I Am A Beautiful Monster, Arthouse1, London (2017). Solo exhibitions of her work have been held in MART Gallery, Dublin (2017); Platform Arts, Belfast (2017); Eight Gallery, Dublin (2016) & Wandesford Quay Gallery, Cork (2015). From 2014-17 she completed a long-term residency at Fire Station Artist Studios and is currently artist in residence in Parity Studios, UCD in the School of Architecture & Engineering.
